Do you struggle with:

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Bloating

  • Gas

You may have something called irritable bowel syndrome.

WHAT IS IT?

  • Irritable bowel syndrome presents with abdominal pain or discomfort that is relieved with defecation and is associated with a change in stool frequency or change in appearance of stool

  • It is a functional gut-brain disorder, characterized by changes in the gastrointestinal tract, specifically the large intestine

  • Commonly associated with

    • Visceral hypersensitivity (viscera or abdominal organs being VERY sensitive to any distention or change in shape of the stomach, small intestine or large intestine). This is why you may feel bloated.

    • Abnormal colonic contractions contributing to diarrhea or constipation

WHAT CAUSES IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME?

  • There is a dysbiosis (or imbalance) of the gut microbiome. In other words, there is an imbalance between good and bad bacteria. Often times, the communication pathway between the gut and brain is disordered

WHAT IS THE GUT MICROBIOME?

  • In those with IBS, there is a dysfunction in the microbiome.

  • The gut is made of many microorganisms that make up the gut microbiome

  • The gut microbiome helps

    • Strengthen the intestinal barrier

    • Optimize nutrient absorption and utilization

    • Defend against pathogens and improve your immune system

    • Produce B-vitamins and vitamin K

    • Regulate appetite and food intake, metabolism, digestion

AN UNIDEAL GUT MICROBIOME AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO IBS

  • An unideal gut microbiome includes the following:

    • Lack of bacteria variety

    • Negative bacteria thriving

    • Lack of bacteria (quantity)

  • When the gut microbiome isn't ideal, the gut cannot function to its 100%

  • This can lead to many things, including:

    • Depression: WHY? Neurotransmitters produced in the gut (including serotonin and dopamine - your happy hormones) are malfunctioned! When your "happy" hormones aren't producing, this can result in depression.

    • Pain Sensitivity: Dysbiosis of microbiome can lead to increased pain sensitivity, leading to bloating and GI upset
